Despite huge cost implications, Elmhurst remained open for residents and staff during extensive refurbishment to ensure limited disruption to life as everyone knew it. Although this wasn’t the ideal route to take, residents, family, friends, staff, and the local community appreciated the fact that Elmhurst remained open, and the decision to remain open cemented the new foundation that Elmhurst is built around family needs.
The later years of life should be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The home has been reconfigured to make it more accessible, with improved infrastructure, wider doorways, and upgraded handling equipment.
Elmhurst continues to evolve. Unafraid of a challenge, the owners decided to add a third unit. Work commenced on the Elizabeth Suite in 2023 and was completed in the summer of 2024. The Elizabeth Suite was officially opened by HM’s Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs. Anna Turner JP, on 18th July 2024.
The Elizabeth Suite provides an additional 21 bedrooms and is a residential unit. The unit also provides a staff training room and additional storage.
Between 2025 and 2026, flooring throughout the rest of the building was updated to match the flooring in the Elizabeth Suite. The Charles Suite, Follies View (including the hairdressing salon), and the reception area were redecorated and had new lighting, furniture and soft furnishings. The Charles Suite, Follies View, and staffroom kitchenettes were refurbished. We also now have a sensory room in the Charles Suite.
Further landscaping was undertaken at the rear of the building, whilst the front car park was transformed, meaning more spaces for visitors.
Surrounded by beautiful Shropshire countryside, Elmhurst benefits from a calming tranquillity that only a scenic landscape can provide. Open plan communal lounges are filled with natural light, giving sweeping views of hills, as well as the local Follies. Many of the bedrooms also have the same panoramic views.
Elmhurst is a safe, homely environment where residents are protected and cared for every minute of the day. The home is managed by Paula – the sister-in-law of owner, Phillipa.
As a family-run care home comprising three generations – parents, children and grandparents – the team work passionately to care for residents and to ensure the smooth running of day-to-day operations. Whether it’s trained nursing, preparing an appetising and nutritious meal, or painting walls and completing odd jobs, the Elmhurst team are an extension of your family.
There are family connections amongst the staff too. Within the team we have mothers and daughters, mother and son, father and son, brother and sister, sisters, husbands and wives, partners, uncles, aunts, and nieces. It truly is a family affair at Elmhurst.

Elmhurst originally opened in the early 1980s and was privately owned by locals, Fred and Veronica Allen. It was later sold to a corporate organisation but thankfully is now once again in the hands of private owners.
For twelve months, half of Elmhurst remained closed to allow for extensive refurbishments to be made to the dementia care unit. The refurbishments included an extended kitchen, a new laundry room, an on-site salon for visiting hairdressers, a staff training room, plus upgraded lighting, Wi-Fi and climate control technology.

A clean and comfortable home awaits all residents, with high end furnishings and inspirational décor. Bedrooms and communal areas are bright and airy to ensure residents and visitors feel welcome and at ease.
Elmhurst has an open house policy and visiting hours are not restricted. Family, friends, and children are free to stay as long as they wish with loved ones – we’re also pet-friendly.
Elmhurst specialises in dementia through to palliative care. Every resident is treated with respect and sensitivity, retaining their dignity and independence for as long as possible, living their later years in a peaceful and calming atmosphere.
Using a resident-centred care plan, a holistic and all-encompassing approach is taken to address the level of support necessary. This includes dietary requirements, medication, accommodation, and a healthy range of activities – for the mind, body and soul.
